FAQ

What workloads and production use cases is the Dell PowerEdge R730 suited for?

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is an excellent fit for virtualisation (VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox), SQL databases, ERP systems, and backup workloads. With dual Xeon E5 v3/v4 processors and up to 768 GB of DDR4 ECC RAM, it handles demanding production environments without becoming a bottleneck in day-to-day operations.

What is the difference between the 8x2.5" and 16x2.5" versions of the R730?

The 8-bay 2.5" configuration is well suited for typical application deployments. The 16x2.5" version offers significantly greater SSD storage expansion potential - ideal for environments where high IOPS is a priority, such as large database workloads or intensive backup operations.

What is a recertified server, and is it worth buying?

A recertified server is a pre-owned unit that has been fully tested and verified before resale. R730 servers from Hardware Direct arrive ready for production use and come with a warranty of up to 36 months (optionally 60 months). For businesses looking to balance cost and reliability, it is a solid alternative to buying new.

What is iDRAC and why does it matter?

iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) is a built-in remote management module. It lets you install operating systems, update firmware, monitor drive health, and reboot the server - all without physical access to the machine. The R730 includes iDRAC 8 Enterprise, which is especially valuable for administrators managing infrastructure remotely.

How much does a Dell PowerEdge R730 cost?

Pricing depends on the specific configuration - processor, amount of RAM, storage, and any additional components. Recertified R730 units are considerably more affordable than new servers of this class, making them a practical option for businesses with tighter budgets. Current pricing for individual configurations is available directly on the Hardware Direct category page.

Can the R730 be delivered with a pre-configured operating system ready to go?

Yes - Hardware Direct offers the R730 with a pre-installed OS: Windows Server, Proxmox, ESXi, or Debian. Once delivered, simply plug in the server and log in. No installation from scratch, which can make a real difference when project timelines are tight.
