FAQ

What is the Dell MD1420 disk enclosure designed for?

The Dell PowerVault MD1420 is a 2U direct-attached storage (DAS) enclosure that expands a server's data capacity. It's a good fit when a server's internal drive bays are no longer enough, for example for backups, archiving, virtualization or databases. It connects directly to the server, with no SAN required.

What drives can be installed in the MD1420, and how many?

The MD1420 has 2.5-inch drive bays and holds 24 drives in its standard configuration. Depending on the configuration, it supports SAS, NL-SAS and SSD drives, so you can tailor the setup to your needs: choose speed (SSD) or capacity and a low cost per TB (NL-SAS). Check the exact list of supported drives before ordering.

What cables and cards are needed to connect the MD1420 to a server?

The enclosure connects to the server with SAS cables via an HBA card or a RAID controller with external SAS ports. You will usually need a suitable mini-SAS HD cable. Before buying, make sure your server has a free PCIe slot and a compatible controller. If you're unsure, our technical team can help.

Does the MD1420 have its own RAID controller?

No. The MD1420 is a JBOD/DAS expansion enclosure, not a standalone array with its own RAID controllers. RAID arrays are managed by a controller in the server, such as one from the PERC family, or by software, such as a file system or a software-defined solution. Keep this in mind when planning RAID levels and fault tolerance.

How can I check whether the MD1420 will work with my server and drives?

Start with your server model, the type of controller or HBA card, and the drives you plan to use (type, capacity, interface). This will help you determine whether you need additional cards or cables. If you're not sure, contact us. We can help you choose a compatible configuration before you order.
