What can the Dell MD1200 disk enclosure be used for, and what type of device is it?
The Dell PowerVault MD1200 is a 2U DAS (direct-attached storage) enclosure that connects directly to a server via a SAS interface. It lets you expand server capacity quickly and affordably, for example for backup, archiving, file storage or virtualization. It is not a SAN storage array, so the data is shared by the server it is connected to.
What drives can be installed in the MD1200, and how many does it hold?
The MD1200 has 12 hot-swappable bays for 3.5-inch drives. It supports SAS, Nearline SAS and SATA drives, so you can choose them to suit your needs: capacity, performance or cost. Before buying, check that the specific drive models and capacities are compatible with the enclosure and the controller.
How do I connect the MD1200 to a server, and what controller do I need?
The enclosure connects to the server with SAS cables (6 Gb/s) through a compatible RAID controller or HBA, for example from the Dell PERC family. MD1200 enclosures can be daisy-chained, and the maximum number depends on the controller. Before buying, check that the controller is compatible with your server and the RAID configuration you want.
How does the MD1200 differ from the MD1220 and MD1400, and which one best suits my needs?
The MD1200 supports 3.5" drives and focuses on capacity. The MD1220 is a variant with 2.5" drives, better where performance matters, including with SSDs. The MD1400 is a newer generation with a 12 Gb/s SAS interface. The right choice depends on the capacity and speed you need and on controller support in your server.
Will any hard drive work in the MD1200?
Not every drive is suitable. Drives are installed in dedicated Dell caddies, so the drive alone is not enough. The drive interface (SAS, NL-SAS or SATA) must also be compatible with the controller. Mixing drive types within a single RAID group is generally not recommended. If you are not sure, check the compatibility of your chosen model before ordering.
